INTRODUCTION The enhancement of language proficiency among secondary school students in Uzbekistan is a critical educational objective, particularly given the nation's increasing integration into the global economy and its commitment to educational reforms. According to the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan (2023), only 35% of secondary school graduates achieve an intermediate level (B1) or higher in English language proficiency, with vocabulary deficits frequently identified as a primary barrier [1]. Simultaneously, the global market for educational games is projected to reach $38.7 billion by 2026, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.5% [2], underscoring the widespread adoption and perceived effectiveness of game-based learning across various educational contexts. The growing digital literacy among Uzbek youth, with internet penetration rates reaching 80.5% in 2023 [3], further creates a fertile environment for integrating innovative digital and non-digital game-based methods into language instruction. Despite the evident potential of game-based learning, traditional vocabulary teaching methods in Uzbek secondary schools often rely on rote memorization and direct translation, which can lead to superficial learning and poor long-term retention [4]. A recent survey by the National Center for Education Quality Assurance (2023) indicated that 60% of English language teachers in Uzbekistan reported difficulties in motivating students to learn new vocabulary, citing a lack of engaging and interactive resources as a major contributing factor [5]. This pedagogical gap highlights an urgent need for innovative approaches that align with modern learning theories such as Deep Processing Theory and Sociocultural Theory of Language Learning, which emphasize active engagement, meaningful context, and collaborative interaction for effective vocabulary acquisition [6]. The limited systematic integration of Game-Based Learning and Gamification strategies into the national curriculum, coupled with insufficient teacher training in these methodologies, means that the full benefits of these approaches are yet to be realized, leaving a significant area for improvement in enhancing vocabulary instruction effectiveness and student engagement.
