INTRODUCTION
According to the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan, the number of A2 level English language learners in secondary schools and academic lyceums reached approximately 1.8 million in 2023 [1]. Concurrently, the 2023 National English Language Proficiency Assessment revealed that only 45% of A2 level students demonstrated satisfactory listening comprehension skills, indicating a significant gap in pedagogical effectiveness within this crucial language domain [2]. This disparity is particularly pronounced given the increasing global emphasis on communicative competence, with the global English as a Foreign Language (EFL) market projected to reach USD 75.3 billion by 2027, underscoring the economic and social imperative for enhanced language acquisition [3]. The enduring relevance of effective listening strategies for A2 level learners stems from the persistent challenges encountered in developing robust auditory comprehension skills, despite advancements in language pedagogy. Many traditional teaching methods often overemphasize grammar and vocabulary acquisition, neglecting the dynamic and cognitive processes inherent in successful listening [4]. Unresolved problems include the lack of tailored strategies addressing specific A2-level listening hurdles, such as distinguishing between connected speech, inferring meaning from context with limited vocabulary, and managing cognitive load during real-time processing [5]. Furthermore, the rapid integration of digital learning environments necessitates a re-evaluation of how listening strategies are taught and practiced, moving beyond conventional textbook exercises to incorporate interactive and authentic materials. This coursework aims to address these critical gaps, proposing practical and empirically supported teaching strategies to significantly enhance listening comprehension among A2 learners, thereby fostering greater communicative proficiency and better preparing them for higher levels of language acquisition.
International scholarship has significantly contributed to understanding listening comprehension and its pedagogical implications. X.Y. (2018) demonstrated in their study that the explicit teaching of metacognitive strategies, such as planning and monitoring, positively impacts A2 learnersโ ability to manage listening tasks by improving self-regulation and comprehension accuracy [6]
