INTRODUCTION The mastery of English word order is becoming increasingly critical within the educational landscape of Uzbekistan, particularly given the nation's strategic focus on multilingual proficiency and global integration. For instance, the number of students enrolled in English language programs across all levels of education in Uzbekistan has increased by approximately 35% between 2019 and 2023, reaching over 1.2 million individuals in the academic year 2022-2023, according to data from the Ministry of Preschool and School Education [1]. Concurrently, the volume of academic publications in English by Uzbek researchers has risen by 25% over the past five years, as reported by the Higher Attestation Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan [2]. The precise arrangement of words, whether fixed or flexible, directly impacts meaning, clarity, and the overall pragmatic effect of a message, making its study indispensable for advanced linguistic competence. The enduring relevance of word order studies stems from persistent challenges encountered by non-native speakers, particularly in contexts where the first language exhibits significant typological differences from English. Despite decades of pedagogical advancements, a significant proportion of Uzbek learners of English continue to struggle with the intricacies of English word order, leading to grammatical errors that impede effective communication and sometimes alter intended meaning [3]. While pedagogical approaches have often focused on prescriptive rules, there remains an unaddressed need for a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of how fixed and free word order principles manifest in contemporary English, especially concerning pragmatic nuances and information structure. Unresolved problems include the optimal integration of corpus-based insights into curriculum design, the development of targeted pedagogical interventions that address specific L1 transfer issues related to word order, and a comprehensive framework for assessing word order competence beyond simple grammatical correctness, encompassing communicative effect and naturalness [4].
